CONWAY, Ark. – The Hendrix College men's and women's swimming & diving teams kicked off the 2012-13 season with the 45th Annual Hendrix College Classic at Bob Courtway Pool on Friday night. The Warrior women broke two school records on their first night off competition.
The 400 yard medley relay team made up of junior
Jo Claire Robertson, sophomore
Sydney Haldeman and freshmen
Bayley Krell and
Caroline Forbes shattered a 22-year old record with a time of 4:07.21, finishing fourth. The Warriors broke the old mark of 4:14.81 set in 1991 by more than seven seconds.
Forbes, from Baton Rouge, La., broke an eight-year old record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 55.79, finishing fifth. She beat out Anna Patterson's 2004 mark of 55.90. Forbes was also .19 seconds away from setting a new program best in the 50 yard freestyle, placing sixth in 25.44.
Robertson finished sixth in the 200 yard backstroke in 2:13.94 and eighth in the 200 yard butterfly in 2:21.33
Haldeman, of Conway, placed seventh in the 200 freestyle in 2:03.52. Krell took second in the 200 breaststroke in 2:32.40 and 10th in the 200 yard individual medley in 2:23.27. The 400 freestyle relay team of Burt,
Kate Henricks,
Alanna Montgomery and
Laura Price finished eighth in 4:13.30.
Other top finishers for the Hendrix women included senior
Sheryl Burt in the 1000 yard freestyle (11th, 11:38.56) and senior
Emily Hanson in the 500 freestyle (16th, 6:12.59).
For the men, freshman
James Gill placed 10th in the 1000 yard freestyle in 12:01.81 and swam a 5:41.59 time in the 500 freestyle, taking 14th. Junior
John Byford took 10th in the 200 IM in 2:05.71 and 17th in the 200 backstroke in 2:11.60.
Other top finishers for the Warriors included freshman
Eric Mullins in the 200 freestyle (17th, 2:02.84) and 100 free (22md, 54.54), sophomore
Clayton Jacobs in the 50 freestyle (18th, 28.76) and sophomore
Samuel Maynard in the 200 butterfly (18th, 2:23.28).
The Warriors will host the 50th Annual Hendrix Relays on Saturday beginning with the diving at 9:30 a.m.
